Jay McNallie

Director, Product Development

Jay McNallie first learned to code in simple BASIC programs on a Texas Instruments computer he picked up at a garage sale as a kid. As an undergrad business student in Colorado, he discovered the Internet and quickly learned to build, style, and program basic web apps. Jay landed an internship, and, ultimately, his first full-time position with Lockheed Martin. During his 15 years at Lockheed Martin, he held positions in various space and ground based programs and worked on both thick client and enterprise web-based applications. In 2015, Jay teamed with several Lockheed Martin peers at Connexta to demonstrate the power of open source software in Department of Defense and Intelligence Community applications. Today, he manages Product Development at Octo where he continues to build innovative capabilities on top of the open source core he’s been involved with since 2013. Jay loves to receive feedback from end users of software so that he can continue to make Department of Defense tasks more efficient.

In Jay’s Words…

Innovation Insight

I am passionate about building and sharing open source software with our customers and the world. Building and contributing to open source technologies affords me the opportunity to connect with some of the smartest people in the world – across industries and continents – to develop solutions to common problems. Two layers of icing on this proverbial cake really benefit our customers: 1) our customers reap all of the benefits of the investment that has gone into the solution by adopters before them and 2) they are no longer beholden to proprietary, closed source solutions with restrictive licensing terms!

Why Octo

oLabs is both a physical space and a sense of culture where I can work with like-minded engineers and product people to try new approaches and build new capabilities, all while knowing that if we fail or it doesn’t work like we intended, we still gained something in the end. oLabs, the space, is a digital workshop where our customers can bring their problems and gain access to some of the brightest minds in the defense and federal space. Through oLabs, we offer a bleeding edge hardware stack to develop solutions specific to our customers’ challenges.
